What do cancer, a lack of opportunity; severe difficulties affecting children and homelessness have in common?
- A – We wouldn’t wish this on anyone?
- B – They are sad and unfortunate facts of life today?
- C – They are causes for which money is being raised during the fasting month of Ramadan?
The answer is all of the above!
Ramadan is a very spiritual time in the Muslim calendar. But beyond the religious prayers and observations, it is also a special time because, like Christmas, it has a long established tradition of sharing and selfless giving that is every much a part of it, just like the fasting.
The Islamic Society of Britain (ISB) is a community based charity and not-for-profit company. Established in 1990, we were one of the first organisations that sought to evolve a uniquely British flavour to Islam.
We believe that charity should begin at home and that British Muslims should be just as concerned about poverty, inequality and injustice on their doorsteps as elsewhere else in the world – in fact we should be more concerned about what is going on here in Britain.
Every year we raise money for ISB during Ramadan, but this year we want to share this with 4 UK charities – causes that do some amazing work and are giving tirelessly to help and support people at the most difficult times of their lives:
The work they do is incredible, so too are the people that make it possible – we all know that. To show our appreciation for the above charities, we will give half of everything donated to ISB during this month to the charities above. So please join us in raising as much money as we can for these charities and also the ISB, during Ramadan, the month of charity.
Each week we will share some of that incredible work they do, to encourage you to give generously. And each week, we will split the money raised with one of these charities. You can donate by text (text: ISBR70 £5 (or 1,2,3,4 or 10) to: 70070), by clicking on http://www.justgiving.com/BritIslam; or by cheque or bank transfer*.
